A new-comer to the list of great female solo artists is Adele. Born Adele Laurie Blue Adkins in Tottenham, 1988. Such is the popularity of her official YouTube Channel, AdeleVEVO it has already amassed 15 million subscribers with over 6 billion views. One of the biggest factors with Adele is that you instantly recognize her voice, no matter what track it is that is playing. Her debut album “19” was released in 2008 under XL Recordings and received both critical and commercial success. Hometown Glory was the standout single, which the singer wrote when aged 16, this covered the period in her life when she lived in West Norwood, London. She has received recognition from around the globe, with American Billboard Magazine awarding her the coveted title of “Artist of the Year” no less than 3 times. Time Magazine have also been keen to be stole the magnificence of the London born singer, naming her as one of the most influential people in the world in both 2012 and 2016. Even in a relatively short music career so far, Adele is known for the following smash hits:
- Set Fire To The Rain
- Rolling In The Deep
- Someone Like You
She has even broken into the silver-screen, although not as an actor (yet). Adele co-wrote with Paul Epworth and performed the hit song Skyfall for the James Bond movie of the same name. The song went on to win an Oscar for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Song, in 2012.
Britney Jean Spears broke onto the world stage when she signed for record label Jive Records back in 1997. The execs at Jive obviously knew a thing or two about spotting superstar talent as they also had a number of mega-stars on their books, including R. Kelly, Chris Brown, Justin Timberlake and Billy Ocean to name but a few. International success was not far away for Spears, with the release of her debut studio album “Baby One More Time”. Selling more than 100 Million copies around the globe, it was certified as Double-Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Other big hits recorded by Spears include:
- Scream And Shout
- Hold It Against Me
Like others before her, Spear’s personal life also wasn’t too far away from the headlines. Twice married, she had issues with custody over her children, which at the time would have presented itself as the darkest moments of her life to date. She has worked hard to keep pace with some of the other artists around, re-inventing herself on a number of occasions to stay at the top of her game. There is no doubting the talent offered by both Adele and Britney Spears and what they have achieved in relatively short music careers. Stay tuned for our 3rd and final instalment of great female solo artists.
